Grants Impact

SmartBoard

PHS Foundation grants are meant to improve the education the students receive at Parkersburg High School. The following faculty have been able to express their appreciation for some of the grants awarded by the Foundation.

2010 Grants

2009 Grants

The Mimio Interactive Board has increased the students' willingness to come to the front of the class to solve problems. It has expanded my ability to use different resources at the same time while teaching. We have experienced Math in a whole new way.
Wayne Clark, Math teacher
The grant has had a great impact on my advanced level class. Three vodcasts have been produced already and I have built units around them. All deal with Spain The fourth is in production and the fifth is in the planning stage. It has been a great learning experience for all involved. Thanks to the PHS Foundation."
Dave Marlow, Spanish teacher
I want to thank the Parkersburg High School Foundation for funding my application for a net book to be used during emergences. Shannon Miller, who was the registrar at the time, tried the computer in the Field House and the Stadium ticket booth. It worked in both places. Because the Foundation is willing to provide funding for projects like the net book, Parkersburg High School continues to lead in technology as well as many other field."
Terry Hickle and the Tech Team
I wanted to thank you for your provisions of grant money that have provided for the purchasing of Flip brand video cameras and Kodak brand still picture cameras. I have personally used these cameras throughout my lesson plans to create learning opportunities that most students do not have. Students have also utilized the cameras to develop and produce television commercials by utilizing business, advertising, and marketing skills that will certainly be of importance in real-world career situations."
Dustin Lindolph, Advanced Communications

2008 and Earlier Grants

The PHS Foundation gave me a grant for a SmartBoard. My SmartBoard is a "kid magnet" with endless possibilities.

In a teacher-directed tutorial, I utilize my SmartBoard to visually demonstrate the components of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access in my Business Computer Application classes. It can also be used as a collaboration tool.
Elaine Tice
The Foundation has provided technology that makes my lessons more interesting and allows me to explain concepts in a manner that would not be possible any other way.
Terry Hickle
The Tech Team received laptops to add to the mobile lab. This helps when large classes use the lab.

I received my PHS Foundation grant for my SmartBoard in 2005. I received $3279.00 and I purchased a SmartBoard and stand, and a projector and mount. This is now my 4th year using them. I use the SmartBoard exclusively as my white board. I have invited other Wood County schools to come and see my purchase. As a result, several other schools have since purchased SmartBoards for their classrooms as well.

I have added new equipment since my original purchase. I now have an Airliner slate and also use Qwizdom responders in my classroom
Mary Wright
The PHS Foundation provided a grant to buy laptops to add to our mobile laptop labs. They had great benefit to our students because this allowed us to have full labs that accommodated even our largest classes. Without this grant, larger classes would not have been in a position to fully utilize this powerful technological tool.
The PHS Technology Team
My students were thrilled with the abridged versions of classical and popular literature titles. They read each book and want to know what's next. The grant enabled me to help instill a love for reading in my students. I am very proud of the curriculum I have been able to assemble with the aid of the PHS Foundation
Debbie File
My grant was for a laptop, LCD projector and a scanner/printer. This allowed me to make PowerPoint presentations for my Visual Art and Art History classes.

Art is such a visual subject, so conveying ideas through images is the most effective way to teach these courses. I converted over most everything from the old slide shows. PowerPoint also allows text to be injected on to the slide presentation.
Steve Morningstar
The Health/Physical Education Department has been fortunate to receive two grants from the PHS Foundation to enrich curriculum and instruction.

The Physical Education Department received a grant for Dance, Dance Revolution (DDR) which enabled our physical education students to engage in aerobic fitness. Approximately 100 students participate with this technology-based learning tool each semester. They love this mode of physical fitness, and we would welcome funding for additional equipment and stations.

The Health Department also received a grant for additional CPR manikins. Sophomore health students are trained and certified in the practical skills of CPR. Approximately 600 students are trained and certified in CPR each semester. The additional manikins provide the students an opportunity for more practice and better skills. What a welcome addition to our health curriculum for the training of this state-required live-saving life skill!

Many thanks for making a difference at PHS. We are so fortunate to have an active and caring Foundation who is dedicated to making Parkersburg High School a better place for staff and students.

We appreciate you!
Susan Gardner
