"Save the Lights" Project
For many people in the Parkersburg community, the December annual Lighting Ceremony at PHS is the beginning of the holiday season. "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Men." That tradition of hearing the carols and seeing the words light up on the front of the school has been ongoing since the 1940's when the lights were made in the sheet metal classes under the stadium at PHS. They have endured the rain, wind, snow and ice. Each year they were taken down and stored in a small difficult area to access and each year they had become a little more fragile.
The PHS Foundation decided it was time to "Save the Lights." Spearheaded by Don Singer, sheet metal expert, and Bill Meredith, electrician, the project has involved sanding and painting the metal letters, rewiring each letter to be up to code and building two metal storage boxes to house the letters on the roof of the school. The project took most of the summer and was completed in August 2010.
Contributions from the summer reunions, materials from six area businesses, and labor from twelve volunteers from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have helped to make the project a success. Community members are invited to participate in the project with a donation to the PHS Foundation "Save the Lights" Project.....and to attend the December Lighting Ceremony. Hopefully, the lights will continue for future generations.
